| Introduction This site contains a series of essays I've written about the music, the bands, the people, and the cultural that was part of my growing up in Waldwick, New Jersey. These essays will bring you back to a time when making music was really fun. It's more than just a personal history because it spotlights a garage culture that was exploding all over the world, and it's an archive of sorts for the friends that were there, and anyone interested in the Garage Band Scene in the 1960s. Although I've primarily focused on our local tight-knit scene, it's imposible not to include many of the bands, clubs, and events that were also local to the entire northern NJ region. As we grew older, we became part of the Global Community and things changed forever. Good, bad...whatever, these changes were inevitable. These essays focus on small segments of those changes through memory (which is fadeing fast), the few photos that remain, and contributions by people who would like to see this site grow. Names and dates may be a bit fuzzy, so please continue to correct me where possible, and send me your memories, artifacts, and stories. ABOUT THIS SITE Unfortunately the software that generates this site is not what I wanted in supporting the graphics I'd like to present, so I've had to make some changes. Content, layout, and functionality are better displayed and I have greater control over the general "look", so please bear with my experimentations. The free hosting services of the previous site (Homestead) are no longer available to me, and the current host (Fortunecity) seems to be okay (for now), but I'm afraid you'll have to deal with a few more advertisements in the process. I'll deal with that soon, so please don't get frustrated. Refer back to the THE MUSIC page for a list of, and access to, all the essays. That's fairly simple. And due to the restrictions of the template, you may have to view an attached file to see the graphics associated with some of the essays. As my HTML skills improve (and at this age...I'm pretty impressed), I'll hopefully improve the functionality of each page. As stated above, much of the information and many of the photos have been contributed by visitors to this site who were part of the scene at the time. I'd like to thank the efforts of Jeff McGinn, Gloria Drechsel, Barbara Silvan, Russ Haidanger, and Rich Rilliet in particular for their photos and memories. CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE There is much more to the stories I've posted here, and I'd like to see them grow and clearify many of the connections I've only grazed upon. I'll continue to update (as memories return), but please feel free to contact me with corrections and additional information if you have it. Finally; no mention of the times and bands would be complete without mentioning our parents. They were the ones who drove us around, bought us our instruments, hosted our rehearsals, and allowed us to explore our new-found musical freedoms. This wasn't an easy thing for them...considering the times. It took a lot of courage and love to let us go into places and listen to music that wasn't fully accepted and/or understood. I'm sure they would have prefered us playing it "safe"...but they saw the world changing and never ceased to give us the support, encouragement, and guidance we would need to go forward. Some of us didn't make it, but those who did, can only look back now with respect for their boldness and hope that we can follow in their footsteps. The 60's would not have been the milestone that they were without them. Thank you! |
